Peter's Message
Dear Friends,

The discussion question we posed at the April 29 Congregational Meeting was List three areas of ministry in which you wish to see First Presbyterian Church become recognized for excellence and faithfulness to the gospel. Predictably, on hearing the question, the room got very quiet. Then people did as asked, moving into small groups. Conversations began -- slowly at first, then gaining momentum, until the CFC reached a happy din.

The small groups reported their areas of hoped-for excellence and faithfulness. Sharing love with all people headed the list. Why? Because love reveals the gospel. Welcoming visitors and Living with differences indicated a similar generosity of spirit. Opening our facilities to others continued the theme of community engagement. Excellent music, youth and children's programs, and Stimulating Christian education opportunities were high on people's lists, as was Involvement in local mission. More hopes were articulated; clearly this is a congregation with sights set high. We should settle for nothing less.

The following weekend was the session's annual retreat, an opportunity for further reflection, dialogue, and forward-thinking. For me it's a favorite time. Away from the church, away from our usual business, together and unhurried, in song, prayer and conversation we immersed ourselves in ideas and issues. Among other topics, we reflected on the question of what we'd learned in the past twelve months. The first response made me smile: We learned not to be afraid of change. Wow, I thought -- it would be enough if the list stopped there. Other lessons included We can set goals and meet them and We can communicate (effectively) with the congregation (using bulletin inserts, the eNews and Patio News, and congregational meetings). Moving on to ministry challenges, consensus formed around such items as strengthening our financial future, growing in our stewardship of the environment, supporting strong youth program leadership, growing as an outwardly focused/mission conscious church, assimilating new members effectively, growing in diversity, and continuing to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and faith building.

Needless to say, this congregation is led by a Spirit-filled session. Join us in worship on Sunday, June 3 as we ordain and install new elders and deacons, and celebrate the ministries of friends whose terms are ending. Well done, good and faithful servants!

Grace and peace,
Peter

Chariots of Friends Visits Willoughby World
On Wednesday, May 23, the Chariots of Friends drove to Willoughby World, home of Bert and Geri Willoughby, for a catered lunch and great time of fellowship. There was a little added adventure for the riders of Calvin. After picking up several people, it had an engine failure, and the riders were rescued by Peter and Geri. All ended well, though, and a good time was had by all.

New Van Driver for Calvin! Hooray!
Member Dave Morley has just joined the pool of van drivers with Class B (Commercial) licenses. Because of Calvin's capacity of 21 passengers, drivers need additional certification from the DMV and must have bi-yearly medical examinations. Our grateful thanks to Dave Morley for volunteering for this important and rewarding ministry.
