The 6th Annual Mission Conference
The 6th Annual Mission Conference took place Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008. Attendance at this year's conference was the best yet, with about 25 presenters offering individual, group, and panel formats. We were delighted to have as our keynote speaker Rev. Earl Palmer, Senior Pastor of University Presbyterian Church, Seattle, WA.  Rev. Palmer is a noted speaker, pastor, and author of more than 20 books. Five workshops were offered in the morning session and five in the afternoon session.  In addition an 11th workshop for pastors only was offered by Rev. Palmer. See the Mission Conference website for more information. A HUGE thanks to Chuck Curtis and his many helpers for making this such a wonderfully inspiring event.

"ODD MONTH ED " January 27 : The New Atheists - Recently atheism has become all the rage, at least judging by a series of New York Times best-selling books claiming that belief in God is irrational and that "religion poisons everything." How credible are these claims? This is a four-week course led by Professor James Taylor, professor of philosophy at Westmont College, and a specialist in apologetics and the philosophy of religion (10:30 in Anderson Lounge).

ADULT EDUCATION –JANUARY 2 7 "The Quest for Jesus in History, Archeology, and the Media" at 9:00 A.M. in Anderson Lounge. Who was Jesus? Answers to this question have varied. How firm is the traditional answer given by the Christian church? Led by Bruce Fisk, Professor of New Testament, from Westmont College.

FPC "JANUARY" STEP-A-THON Join in as we step forward into 200 8 with our pedometers and make walking a commitment to your heath and wellness routine. Mark your total steps each week on the Step-A-Thon Chart in the reception office. Over the next four weeks we'll see how our steps have improved and how you can be on your way to better health. Your Parish Nurse has pedometers for sale this Sunday at a special discount for only $10 from Cottage Hospital (they are regularly $20!) They are easy to use and read, no fancy calculations or set up for they only count steps. Stop by and see Sharon in the Fireside Lounge today .

"PER CAPITA APPORTIONMENT" WHAT IS IT ? All members of Presbyterian churches share equally and responsibly in the costs of national, regional and local headquarters. How? By paying their Per Capita apportionment. For 2008 that amount is $27.70 per member. Paying our utility bills keeps us connected to the utility systems so that we can benefit from the services provided. Similarly, paying our Per Capita keeps the Presbyterian system functioning, and keeps us connected! Most donations to First Presbyterian Church are spent for operating the church and the missions we support. The Per Capita Apportionment is small compared to the overall budget. But that $27.70 adds up! Please consider writing that extra check along with your regular offering. You may note on it "Per Capita Offering". Thank you.

THANK YOU TO EACH OF OUR FLOWER DONORS who have helped to make our Sanctuary so beautiful. We appreciate all of our donors who have honored loved ones for special occasions. To celebrate a birthday or anniversary, remember a loved one or commemorate an event, stop by the reception desk to check the Flower Book for available dates in 2008 and call Juleine at 687-0754 or Lynn at 687-7095; or use a reservation form from the book. Cost: $40 for 1 bouquet, $65 for two. Lynn Handloser, Worship and Music Ministry.

THE PRAYER CHAIN is available to pray for your needs. In the Narthex and Fireside Lounge are Prayer Boxes provided by the Congregational Care Ministry. Please fill out a request form and leave it in the box, email Chuck at: ccurtis@fpcsb.org or call 687-0754, x 102. All prayer requests are kept confidential.
