Peter's Message
Dear Friends,

Lent is early this year, though thankfully it is not something we have to hurry up and get ready for. Lent doesn't involve a lot of preparation. Lent is preparation. That's its purpose. The word Lent means lengthen -- what happens at this time of year when daylight increases and days lengthen. It also has to do with personal lengthening, with spiritual stretching -- personal disciplines that ready us for Easter. It seems counterintuitive, but adding spiritual disciplines during Lent actually makes time seem longer. Maybe it's because we find ourselves living more in the moment when we spend more time with God.

But Lent's spirituality is not just solitary and introspective. Increasing light, after all, doesn't mean shutting ourselves in a closet. Being with others is a special blessing during this season; getting ready for Easter is a group activity. Sundays are a weekly celebration, especially during Lent. They are a feast day, not a fast day, so they are definitely days to enjoy God, one another, creation, and life in general.

Our midweek evening services in the chapel during Lent (7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays) are another chance to worship and be together. Members of the congregation will share their faith stories, something I always look forward to. God's grace is so evident when we reflect and share in this way. We'll sing and share the sacrament at these services. It will be a season of riches indeed. On Maundy Thursday, March 20, the 7:00 p.m. service will include an opportunity for personal healing prayer. God's promises are great. Our needs are real. Christ is present.

May this be a season of riches for you.

Grace and peace, Peter

Jottings from Judith

Messages of Compassion

At First Presbyterian Church we are blessed with a most unusual Board of Deacons. These caring people visit anywhere from two to six (and sometimes more) people regularly keeping in touch with those unable to attend worship. Deacons have formed wonderful friendships.  They experience a growing trust through friendship. Graciousness abounds. In these relationships hearts are opened, troubles halved and joys multiplied. It is a risk to open your heart to another. It is a risk to become a friend to one who suffers loss or illness. Yet, it is nothing short of amazing, the wonders the Deacons discover. Hearts are changed. Lives are renewed. Christ is discovered in another and each one comes to know more his graciousness. Most of all, a Deacon learns to serve those who are hurting with the graciousness of Christ. As the Nominating Committee begins calling for new Deacons and Elders, I invite you to hear God’s call to the ministry of caring.

Blessings to all, Judith

Senior Activity Center Offers Fellowship, Food, and Learning
Every Friday from 10 am to 2 pm, about 25 or so members and friends gather at the church for a time of friendly exchange, good humor, learning from guest speakers and one another, exercise, lunch, and games. Call Juleine to get a calendar of events or just show up in the Garden Room any Friday at 10 am.

Mark your total steps each week on the Step-A-Thon Chart in the reception office. Over the next four weeks we'll see how our steps have improved and how you can be on your way to better health. Parish Nurse Sharon Troll has pedometers for sale. They are easy to use and read, no fancy calculations or set up for they only count steps. You may call Sharon at 687-0754, ext. 103 for more information.

"PER CAPITA APPORTIONMENT" WHAT IS IT? All members of Presbyterian churches share equally and responsibly in the costs of national, regional and local headquarters. How? By paying their Per Capita apportionment. For 2008 that amount is $27.70 per member. Paying our utility bills keeps us connected to the utility systems so that we can benefit from the services provided. Similarly, paying our Per Capita keeps the Presbyterian system functioning, and keeps us connected! Most donations to First Presbyterian Church are spent for operating the church and the missions we support. The Per Capita Apportionment is small compared to the overall budget. But that $27.70 adds up! Please consider writing that extra check along with your regular offering. You may note on it "Per Capita Offering". Thank you.

THANK YOU TO EACH OF OUR FLOWER DONORS who have helped to make our Sanctuary so beautiful. We appreciate all of our donors who have honored loved ones for special occasions. To celebrate a birthday or anniversary, remember a loved one or commemorate an event, stop by the reception desk to check the Flower Book for available dates in 2008 and call Juleine at 687-0754 or Lynn at 687-7095; or use a reservation form from the book. Cost: $40 for 1 bouquet, $65 for two. Lynn Handloser, Worship and Music Ministry.

THE PRAYER CHAIN is available to pray for your needs. In the Narthex and Fireside Lounge are Prayer Boxes provided by the Congregational Care Ministry. Please fill out a request form and leave it in the box, email Chuck at: ccurtis@fpcsb.org or call 687-0754, x 102. All prayer requests are kept confidential.
