Peter's Message
Dear Friends,

I’ll soon be headed to Chicago for the three weeks of residency for Year 2 of my Doctor of Ministry Program. I’m excited, needless to say, as being back in the classroom is a lot of fun. (What a different experience it is compared to high school and college, even seminary, when I was young[er]!) The program is focused on preaching, as you know. I still have much to learn – and as the art and discipline of preaching is going through a time of examination and reconsideration, now is a great time to be a student again. I also think that the more you know, the more you know you need to know more.

My class of 24 (men and women, clergy from around the USA, also Canada and Germany) will be together for the first week’s class, the emphasis of which is performance. Now I know this sounds as if we’ll be practicing pulpit gestures and preacher voices, but the approach that is “performance” in homiletics is really quite different. The books I’ve been reading for this class have been fascinating, focusing more on finding one’s true voice, clearly communicating the heart of the gospel, and minimizing distractions: facial tics, odd movements, and vocal habits which detract from what one is trying to say. (I get kidded about this at home. I pronounce “often” with the t, for example, instead of without the t, as most normal people do. You get the picture.) As much verbal communication is non-verbal, dealing with the non-verbal in preaching is important. Frankly I’m preparing now to deal with the embarrassment of having my speaking habits made public. I’ll let you know how it turns out, though it may be obvious the first Sunday back.

I have many people to thank for making my studies possible. You, the congregation, have been kind and encouraging. Eight wonderful people served on my Parish Project Group here at the church during the year: Jo Bakker, Dave Breuer, John DeWilde, Frank Mateo, Sheri San Chirico, Jean Schiff, Susan Slattery, and Bob Wennberg. I learned so much from them. The session has been extremely supportive. The FPC staff has been generous with their patience and hard work, especially during the times I’ve needed to be away to write papers. And I want to thank Kati. She takes the cake (or the deep-dish Chicago-style pizza pie).

Grace and peace,

Peter

PresbyFolks Visits Santa Barbara History Museum
On Saturday, June 13, the PresbyFolks visited the Santa Barbara History Museum and then had lunch at the historic El Paseo Restaurant. The docent-led tour was a great way to learn about our county's history, see art by local artists, and generally appreciate the wonderful place where we live. For information on how you can participate in PresbyFolks events, please contact Juleine.

We wish her, husband Kerry, and daughters Lucy and Brigid, Godspeed as they travel to India to continue Kerry’s graduate studies. Read Josh’s introduction below and be sure to welcome him and his wife, Lindsay, on Sunday.
