Peter's Message By the grace of God, Our church vision statement says important things. We are a community, thanks to God’s grace. We are a Christian community, one formed around a shared faith in a loving Savior. We are people who seek. We are not passive in our faith; our faith creates in us a desire to be in relationship with others. We value intergenerational community and recognize that this is a rare and precious gift. As people who seek we also find. God leads us in the Word and in the world with insight, understanding, meaning, and purpose. We do not seek in vain. Recently the last line of the statement has been speaking to us -- even more than when we wrote it in 2005. We’re discovering that our service is not only a response to faith, our service deepens faith. We receive as well as give when we put our faith to work. Kevin Ford, in a book the session is reading for its April 30-May 2 retreat, puts it this way: “Paradoxically, the turn away from self makes people more content and energized in their churches.” I wonder if it’s the same paradox Jesus offers when he says “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” All this points to the work of our Associate Pastor Nominating Committee. They will be seeking a pastor for our staff team who has -- among other strengths -- desire, leadership, and skill for joyous service. Considering how involved many of you are in the church and the community, you know how to pray for the APNC. Thank you for your continued prayers for their important work. I imagine that one of the traits they’ll be looking for in a good candidate is one you know a lot about: joy. Grace and peace, Peter |

News about Near East School of Theology and Synod of Syria-Lebanon & Iraq From: Ms. Carol Dolezal-Ng [mailto:nest.carol@gmail.com] Greetings Friends of the Near East School of Theology (N.E.S.T.), Presbyterian News Service has just released news of the latest seminar for Iraqi Presbyterian Women held at the N.E.S.T. Click here for a link to the story by Jerry Van Mater: https://www.pcusa.org/pcnews/2010/10353.htm Also, this November 5-19 is an exciting opportunity to travel to Syria and Lebanon for a mission trip. if you haven't heard yet, the Presbyterian Church (USA) has a new mission network! The Syria-Lebanon Network held a formation meeting last September, 2009. Prior to that in October, 2008, the Iraq Network convened a Consultation and Encounter near Damascus with Presbyterians from the five churches in Iraq. That Iraq Network Consultation provided understanding of the needs and the opportunity for several leadership training seminars held at the Near East School of Theology for the Iraqi Presbyterians. The mission trip this 2010 is a joint venture is organized through the Syria-Lebanon and Iraq Mission Networks of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and sponsored and facilitated by The Outreach Foundation. After arrival and getting settled in the region, the trip will begin with a 3-day consultation at the N.E.S.T. We will then travel throughout the region to "encounter, in their context, the vital presence and ministries of the Churches of the Synod of Syria-Lebanon." We hope for representation throughout the PC(USA) to come and learn more about how we may walk together as Christians! One does not need to be a member of either the Syria-Lebanon Mission Network, or the Iraq Partnership Network, to take part in this gathering. Anyone with an interest in the life of the Church in those areas, and how all of us in the Middle East and in the US can be of mutual benefit in building up the Body of Christ, are most welcome to participate! |
