Bush's declaration in 2000 that Jesus is his favorite philosopher? And what do we make of President Obama's inaugural appeal to dig deep into our souls to find the better angels of our nature? Presidential politics and religion over the course of the past four decades has taken some interesting twists and turns. What do we, as thoughtful American Christians, make of the "religionization" of politics? Come join this opportunity for significant discussion. Kathleen Moore, Professor of Religious Studies at UCSB, earned her doctorate in political science and law degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her expertise is on the legal and political aspects of Muslim communities and contemporary Islam in western societies. Her most recent book, Unfamiliar Abode: Islamic Law in the United States and Britain , has just been published by Oxford Univ. Press. CELEBRATING OUR GRADUATES Jeff Irabon: Graduating from Dos Pueblos High School Some highlights from my life, so far… For what I've done, I'm glad to have seen more of the world, from across the country to New York and across the Globe to China; to the cities of Shanghai, Xi'an, Guilin, and Beijing within China. For what I've learned, I'm thankful for an art teacher, Mr. Gleason, that I had for 3 years and the many lessons and advice he has given me. I am going to attend Santa Barbara City in the Fall, and I am thinking of learning animation while I'm there. “That's all I can think of for now. It isn't much but it'll have to do.” classic humble Jeff. Brian Joseff: Graduating from Santa Barbara High School Brian will be attending Dartmouth in the Fall to study Economics. He is a National Merit finalist, senior class president, played for the SBHS CIF champion soccer team which was ranked the #1 high school team in the nation. Andrew Stubbs: Graduating from SBCC Culinary Arts Andrew, a.k.a. “Stubbs,” recently completed the culinary program at Santa Barbara City College. He was nominated by his peers as Executive Chef for "Tour de Cuisine," the 5-star dinner for 125 family members and friends. During this time he continued as an intern with FPCSB's junior high and high school youth groups and will continue to be involved this summer with all youth programs. Andrew will be studying Psychology or Business at California State University Monterey this fall. Leah Gaston: Graduating from UCLA; History Major, Magna Cum Laude Some major highlights from my college career: 1) Traveling through Egypt, Greece and Western Europe for 7 months during my freshman year. 2) Volunteering with First Pres. Jr. High during freshman and sophmore year. I felt so blessed to develop those relationships and saw God's love reflecting so strongly through the youth. 3) Going to Urbana Missions Conference twice, and learning all about God's heart for the world. It was at Urbana that I heard God commanding me to reach out to the poor and the oppressed. I learned skills at Urbana to act as His ambassador in everything I do, and how to live a life worthy of His calling. 4) Becoming involved with Intervarsity Bruin Christian Fellowship at UCLA. IVBCF pushed me to grow so much closer and deeper to God, taught me how to really study and analyze the Word, learn who Jesus was and what He is still doing, and provided me with a family of faith who work continually to serve one another as an Acts community. Next steps (for Leah): This summer I am moving into Compton in South Central, Los Angeles to work with the Los Angeles Urban Project (through Intervarsity). I will be intentionally living with 5 other students on a budget of $30 per month for all living expenses for 6 weeks while working with youth at Church of the Redeemer (PCUSA) during the day and doing outreach to the community at night. Our goals for the summer are to learn about God's heart for the poor, racial reconciliation and spiritual warfare, and use that to lead an effective ministry in changing this city. I have a few more credits to take in the fall, and will be using next year to figure out my next step. I am applying to teach English in South Korea and to graduate school (for both PhD programs in American History and Master's programs for Education... not sure where I want to go yet :) Matthew Sims: Graduating from Dos Pueblos High Schoo l Jonathan Matthew Sims, or “Matt.” has been quite busy during his four years of high school. Matt has been captain of his club volleyball team for the past five years, he played for Dos Pueblos volleyball team all four of his years there which included three undefeated Channel League seasons, and breaking the thirty-six league game streak of wins against the Dons. Matt is also an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable within Boy Scouts of America . Through his Scouting experience, Matt was able to go to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico twice, something very few Scouts have a chance to do. Matt is also a well rounded student being awarded the Presidential Academic Excellence Award, 200% Community Service Award, and both NHS and CSF awards. Matt also has been an integral part of the youth program here at First Presbyterian Church as both an active member of the High School Youth Group and as an intern/counselor with both the Junior High Youth Program and Presby Camp. Matt will be attending California State University of Chico this fall where he plans to study business with hopes of opening his own business someday. Matt would like to give a big thank you to everyone that helped him to where he is today. His parents and brother for there tremendous support over the years and to Josh Murray for all he as done for me and with me. Kelly Slattery: Graduating from Westmont She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and made the Dean’s List several times during her career at Westmont. Kelly has moved to Portland, Oregon, to pursue a career in the field of social work. Two Ghanaian Boys are graduating as well – Emmanuel Akyen: Graduating from Dunn School Emmanuel will attend Westmont in the fall where he will play soccer and study History. Kingsley Baiden: Graduating from Dunn School Kingsley will attend UCSB in the fall where he will play soccer and is unsure of his course of study at this point. |
